Special Olympics GB Award

July 26th, 2010

Following on from our local activities to support Special Olympics Great Britain (SOGB) and in recognition of our recent work with Lincoln City FC with the Unified Football Events http://www.lincolnpizza.co.uk/?p=589

We are proud to have received an Award from Domino’s Pizza UK & Ireland.

It was extra special as this year the awards were held in Las Vegas and in addition to it being to celebrate 25 years of Domino’s Pizza in the UK & Ireland in was also Domino’s Pizza International’s 50th Birthday celebrations.

Whilst the Award mentions mine and Lisa’s names, it is our team in Lincoln who have helped Lisa support these events and get involved with each activity!

Whilst it’s impossible to name all our team who help support our involvement, a special mention goes to Jake Rawlinson, Stephen Briggs, Rachael Hughes, Josh Rawlinson, Stephen Andrews and Adam Winfield who have even been brushing off their trainers and kicking a few balls during each session… Some better than others I hasten to add.. ;-)

TOP THAT – DOMINO’S UK WINS WORLD’S FASTEST PIZZA MAKER

July 23rd, 2010

Pali Grewal from the UK sets a new world record and scoops the trophy

In Las Vegas yesterday [July 22, 2010], amidst 6,000 cheering spectators, Domino’s Pizza named Pali Grewal the 2010 World’s Fastest Pizza Maker. Grewal, a Domino’s franchisee from the United Kingdom made three large pizzas in an impressive 39.1 seconds, setting a new world record. That’s making three pizzas in 13 seconds each! Pali, Domino’s first international winner, won $3,000 in prize money, a trophy and the coveted title of Fastest Pizza Maker presented by Domino’s President and CEO, J. Patrick Doyle.

“I’ve been hungry for this title for such a long time and it is just awesome to finally win it,” said Grewal. “Like any great athlete, I’ve been practising and practising and now I am going to take a day off.”

The finalists represented Domino’s Pizza stores from around the world, as far away as Malaysia. They had to hand-stretch fresh dough, pizza sauce and top three large pizzas – one pepperoni, one mushroom and one cheese – as quickly as possible. While speed was important, it was only part of the recipe. Quality was scrutinised as two judges highly qualified in Domino’s standard pizza-making practices, inspected the stretching of the dough, application of the sauce and portioning of toppings during the competition. If the pizza was not perfect, it was returned to the competitor who remade the entire pizza, while still being timed.

Grewal, a multi store franchisee from Surrey has been with Domino’s for over 18 years. Grewal has been making pizzas since he was 13 years old.

Domino’s began the “World’s Fastest Pizza Maker” competition in 1982 to honour pizza makers who best exemplify the company’s philosophy of keeping efficiency in the store to allow sufficient time for safe, timely pizza delivery.

“Domino’s Pizza is extremely proud to employ the fastest pizza makers in the world,” said Doyle. “Our emphasis is on the quality of the pizza, while also using our expertise to get them made quickly. The goal for everyone in our stores is to get hot, great-tasting pizzas to customers’ doors as quickly as possible.  The annual ‘World’s Fastest Pizza Maker’ competition recognizes those who do this with the speed of champions every day.”

The “World’s Fastest Pizza Maker” competition was held at Domino’s 50th Anniversary Worldwide Rally in Las Vegas and attended by nearly 6,000 Domino’s team members and franchisees from around the world.

Business Affairs

July 14th, 2010

Extract from Article in Business Franchise Magazine (July/August issue 195)

Source: http://www.businessfranchise.com/special-features/business-affairs/

Andy and Lisa Gamwell (that’s us) worked together for six years before deciding to go into business together in 2003. They now own four Domino’s Pizza franchises in Lincoln and Newark
.

Did you both join the business at the same time?
Yes. Domino’s suggested that Lisa could continue working as a Domino’s store manager while I set up the business, but I felt she had a skill set we needed for the business.

How do you make it work?
We have similar personalities, but we also have different roles. It’s unusual to have the same skill set as your partner, so you need to define your roles in accordance with both your strengths.

Advantage
s?
You can talk your problems through at any time of the day, you don’t have to arrange a meeting, so issues can get sorted out immediately. It also allows us to work flexible hours. Lisa is expecting our first child in September so I can cover her or vice versa if we need someone to look after the children Or, for example, if we’re on holiday and there’s a problem, one of us can be on the phone working while the other one is playing with the children.

Disadvantages
?
As with any new business it’s difficult to take holidays in the early years, but now we have built up a dedicated team we can rely on. We’re always on call while we’re away, but it’s not a problem. I don’t have trouble switching off because I don’t see it as necessary. If we get a phone call at 1am, it’s just part of the business, it’s our life.

Top tip: You both need to be interested and passionate about the business.
